During WWII, Allied airmen were given covert compasses as part of their escape kits. Inspired by those live-saving implements, the Nickel Escape Compass can tell the direction using nothing but a normal-looking US nickel and a piece of string. When suspended on a thread routed through the nearly unnoticeable channel around the coin’s side, the “heads” side will always point to magnetic north, letting covert ops and lost hikers alike find their way with minimal tools.
