Off-color mesh. Cracking leather. Yellowed foam. Well-loved sneakers lost in the backs of closets earn their abnormalities with years of neglect. The ASICS GT-2160, however, comes with them fresh from the box. In a colorway officially called Mauve Grey, these sneakers feature maroon accents flaking to reveal a metallic grey base underneath, a touch the designers say pays tribute to oxidizing metal, and mesh underlays with yellow spots meant to match the fading foam parts. They’re one entry in a line of sneakers meant to look older than they are, but these aren’t akin to a pair of pre-ripped jeans. There’s more skill involved in making new shoes look old, especially accurately. Plus, these come with all of the tech any other ASICS sneaker would — a segmented midsole and GEL in the heel, for example.
